Joe Shell knows appeals. A skilled writer and oral advocate, Joe has won appeals for clients in state and federal court, including at the Supreme Court of Ohio. He brings to the firm significant criminal and civil appellate experience, having been both an appellate public defender for one of Ohio’s largest counties and an associate at one of the world’s biggest civil-defense firms. Joe clerked for the Supreme Court of Wisconsin, where he assisted on complex cases about election law, executive and legislative authority, congressional and state redistricting, and state constitutional provisions. Joe also regularly teaches appellate practice and legal writing at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, from where he earned his J.D., graduating magna cum laude. He also holds a master’s degree in philosophy and a bachelor’s degree in political science, both from Cleveland State University.
